We are all finding ourselves in a strange position as we live in unprecedented times.  A new health threat is shaping the way we live our lives.  In the midst of this health crisis, all of us are asked to keep social distance and stay at home as much as possible.  Being isolated from others helps prevent the spread of illness which is necessary to help the healthcare system keep up with demand for care.

As uncertain as the times are, we are able to implement a few subtle tips that can help us maintain a positive outlook, stay productive, and prevent the spread of illness at the same time.  Here are my top tips!

Create a Routine

Routine provides security and stability even in the most stressful situations.  Even though daily life might look different right now, you can plan your day just like any other.  Start your day with a healthy breakfast, designate time to work, schedule tasks, chores, and time for relaxation.  Don’t forget to maintain sleep hygiene.  Planning and consistency provide a sense of control that we all need in uncertain times.  It also helps us stay healthy and manage stress.

Go Outside

Even if you can’t go to your favorite hot spots, you can still get fresh air despite social distancing.  Fresh air and sunlight can work wonders!  Take a walk or hike just make sure it isn’t in a large group!  This exercise helps keep your body healthy.  You get much needed exercise and will most likely feel refreshed and ready to tackle the next project.

Dedicated Workspace

Many people who typically don’t work from home are now planning to do so.  If you work at home and struggle to stay focused or you find that work is calling 24/7, setting aside a dedicated space to work can help.

Work in a place that is not designed for entertainment or relaxation.  As both of these factors make it harder to concentrate on completing work related tasks.

Regular Breaks

Decide on the start and end times for your work day.  Some people find it harder to focus at home and struggle to stay on task.  Regular breaks can help!  Likewise, if you are a work-a-holic and can’t seem to disconnect, breaks can help you reground, recenter, and take care of yourself!

Breaks clear your mind and help you move your body.  Strive to take a break each hour.  Stretch, grab some water or a snack, take a walk, or a do a short meditation.

Stay Entertained

We are lucky to have a lot of modern comforts and connections even when we are at home.  Often we have access to plenty of entertainment at home.  Play music, listen to the radio, watch your favorite TV show.  All these things are likely still within reach and help you manage stress and uncertainty.

Take Time To Relax

When your workday is done, pack up your laptop and put it out of sight.  It is often easy to keep working long after the day would’ve otherwise ended when you are at home.  Make sure you plan sufficient time to relax, recharge, and stay healthy.
